About Us

Adelan is a UK hydrogen technology company, working in the global energy transition market for clean air.
The founders of Adelan invented the core solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology in 1992, and solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) technology in 1999. Adelan develops new clean, green energy markets through direct sales and strategic partnerships with customers.

Core H2 Technology

Adelan has a global network of scientists, engineers, supply chains and customers with 30+ years of hydrogen technology and clean fuels experience. We are cleantech changemakers, with global brand equity.

Product Development

With over three decades working to reduce barriers to hydrogen technology and low carbon fuels, Adelan is the go-to group for hydrogen technology development, market knowledge, commercialisation and sales.

Supply Chains

Adelan develops and sells clean power and hydrogen production technology, gathering valuable data on markets, system design, supply chains, manufacturing, lifetimes and progressive product improvement.

How can we help?

Core Technology

Scalable from small portable units, right up to grid-connected power stations, fuel cells represent a growing clean growth opportunity. Fuel cells are the cleanest possible technology for dependable and reliable electricity generation. With one of the longest running hydrogen technology R&D programmes in the world – and the longest UK SOFC programme – delivery of off-grid, portable and mobile power solutions is a core strength.

Crucially, Adelan’s quiet, compact and efficient fuel cells use commonly available infrastructure fuels such as LPG and act as a technological stepping stone towards the low-carbon and clean hydrogen economy of the future. Accelerating commercial product development through component and system cost reduction, Adelan develops and optimises mSOFC technology – from materials to design specifications.

Portable & Mobile

Adelan has the skills and capabilities to design, develop and implement micro-power solutions for a range of applications. Technical skills are focused on hydrogen technology systems, materials processing, SOFC testing and use of various fuels, including clean fuels like biofuels and hydrogen.

With more than three decades’ experience in cleantech benefits, system design, and fuel cell/electrolyser demonstration, Adelan has produced numerous demonstrators over the last 30+ years.

In 1998, development of the world’s first portable rapid starting SOFC fuelled by butane was one significant project. Described in the Journal of Power Sources, this project joins many others, such as the development of micro CHP demonstrator units in 1997 and 2000.

Remote Power

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology specific performance depends on the system and application, but there are general criteria that make Adelan mSOFCs especially competitive:

  • Operation on infrastructure fuels such as LPG, bioLPG, LNG, hydrogen
  • Efficient generation of heat and power
  • Quiet, low emission operation
  • Stackable and scalable from small light-weight, portable applications like battery chargers to combined heat and power generators for homes or remote sites
  • Economies of scale driven manufacturing costs and market performance indicators
  • Favorable key performance indicators for cost, lifetime, energy density and carbon

Market and Product Sales

Adelan’s key market is the rapidly expanding decentralised power market. This is a global, scalable market ripe for rapid, clean growth and driven by the requirements of the energy transition and electrification.

The core business relates to integrating hydrogen technologies into products for decarbonised power, heat and cooling applications. Automotive, autonomous, aerospace, rail and marine vehicles, plus portable or remote power for recreation, telecoms, emergency and micro combined heat and power (mCHP) have all emerged in recent years as strong growth markets for Adelan. Adelan projects demonstrate the low costs and utility of our hydrogen technologies for micro-power solutions while continuously proving – and improving – the core technology. Scale-up of manufacturing and maturing supply chains is the key to commercialising these markets.
