We are excited to launch our long-awaited book on the emergence of the hydrogen economy, as an Adelan Publication, called HYSTORY: The Story of Hydrogen.
Published 2 December 2021
This book has been in the making since December 2020, and we are delighted to finally share it to reflect on what the hydrogen economy now needs – scale. The book depicts how history and science meet to generate practical solutions to today’s most urgent issue – climate change.
Dr Michaela Kendall was inspired to create this book alongside Dr Kevin Kendall and Andrew P. B. Lound with the aim to educate as many people as possible on the past, present, and future of hydrogen as the key to solving the global challenges of pollution and climate change. Hydrogen can be produced using renewable energy to create a green, zero-carbon fuel source for displacing traditional, carbon emitting fuels used in a variety of sectors including transport, construction and households. In the book, the authors describe the history of hydrogen since its discovery in 1766, expand on the development after 1969 and talk about what’s next in the hydrogen story.
The Midlands is an important part of the history of hydrogen. Hydrogen was first produced in quantity in Birmingham and has been studied here for over 70 years. Since Adelan is a Birmingham based company, hydrogen is part of our industrial heritage and culture, as well as being an important aspect of our technology. Hydrogen has long held a lot of significance throughout history, more than you may realise. Did you know that the first internal combustion vehicle used hydrogen? Hydrogen has also allowed the airship industry to literally take off! The most unlikely and surprising tale in the book is how the US flew to the moon powered by a British fuel cell!
The book allows readers to follow the history of hydrogen through accounts from leading scientists. It traces its use since discovery, covering the story of scientists from the past who struggled to overcome political and financial barriers to deliver the clean energy they envisioned dominating the future. This book serves as a cautionary tale of how science can lead, but the world doesn’t necessarily follow. It demonstrates how scientific innovations are sometimes ignored due to vested interests and the support needed to turn ideas into practical solutions is often absent.
Don’t miss out, grab yourself a copy and join us on a hydrogen journey through time! The book can be found here www.adelan.co.uk/product/book
Additionally, we are hosting a HYSTORY: The Story of Hydrogen book event with signing on the 9th of December at the Millennium Point. This will be a great opportunity to meet the authors and learn more about how Birmingham and the Midlands have had an influence on the history of hydrogen. You can find more information about the event by clicking this link HYSTORY book release event with signing Tickets, Thu 9 Dec 2021 at 16:00 | Eventbrite
